On Thursday, October 17, 2013, I sat down to have a conversation with award-winning author John Scalzi (@Scalzi) to discuss many things science fiction.

A brief biography of John Scalzi reads:

John Scazi is the author of several SF novels, including this massively successful debut, Old Man’s War, and the New York Times bestsellers The Last Colony, Fuzzy Nation, and Redshirts. Scalzi is a winner of science fiction’s John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer; he won the Hugo Award for Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded, a collection of essay from his popular blog, The Whatever. Recently, he won the Hugo Award for Redshirts.

(biography from The Human Division, updated to included recent award win)

The conversation is available below for your downloading and listening pleasure. But first, the show notes.

  • Our conversation contains a number of spoilers. If you’ve yet to read Redshirts or The Human Division, you may want to read those books before listening to this conversation.
  • The conversation resolves mostly around Scalzi’s last two novels, with the first half of the conversation relating to Redshirtsand the last half relating to The Human Division. Coming out of those two broad topics, things we discussed include: Tropes in science fiction television; science fiction versus science fantasy, what makes for good criticism; the process behind writing both novels; morality plays within science fiction; Star Trek; female characters; the “great experiment”; and much, much more.f
  • There is some NSFW language.
  • The length of the interview is 2 hours 1 minutes 36 seconds.
  • The size is 111 MB
  • The format is mp3, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, stereo
